The Rat-L-Trap has been catching fish for decades, and the half-ounce chrome-and-blue is the pattern that mimics the baitfish running the Outer Banks beachfront. It casts into a headwind better than almost anything its size, which matters on a wide open surf line, and the loud rattle calls fish from a distance when the water is off-colour. It is the reaction bait for bluefish, striped bass and speckled trout when they are up and chasing.
Fish it on the surf, from a pier or off the beach, with a steady wind punctuated by rips of the rod tip. Let it sink a beat and then burn it; the lipless body hunts and flashes without any help from you. When bluefish are blitzing bait, a fast retrieve through the edge of the school draws strikes you can watch. Troll it along an inlet edge when the tide is moving. Change the hooks for new ones once they dull, because the flash and rattle draw the strike and only a sharp point lands it.
