The Buckeye Jig is a hand-tied bass jig built for flipping cover. The skirt gives it bulk and movement without needing a trailer, and the heavy-gauge hook takes a firm set through weed and wood. On the freshwater ponds, ditches and creek bends of the Outer Banks, it is the bait to pick apart a brush pile or a laydown when the fish are tucked in tight.
Pitch or flip it into cover with a weed guard in place, let it fall on a semi-tight line, and work it with short hops once it lands. Rigging it with or without a trailer changes the profile to suit the mood of the fish. In the salt, speckled trout take the same jig worked more slowly around oyster bars. The weed guard lets it come through brush and grass that would snag a bare hook, so it can be fished into cover that other baits cannot reach. Pitch it past the target and drag it in rather than dropping it on top, and let it sit still for a beat after it lands before the first hop.
