It holds the bait away from the weight, in the strike zone, where a finicky fish can see it move. On the freshwater ponds around the banks and the inshore sound water, that finesse presentation is often what draws a bite when nothing else does.

How to fish it here

Tie it a short distance above a drop-shot weight, nose-hook a straight-tail worm or a small plastic, and shake it in place with just enough line tension to keep the tail alive. Work it around creek mouths and pond cover, and give it long pauses. Wide gap and a black nickel finish; speckled trout and largemouth both take it. The wide gap holds a thicker plastic without crowding the point, so a bigger worm can still be fished on the finesse rig when the fish want size. The wide gap and the stand-out shape mean you can fish a bigger plastic than the rig usually allows while keeping the finesse fall that draws a strike.
