RODS
Length is distance. Power is weight. Read both before you buy either.

Reading the buoys and the tide station for surf rods…
Live data unavailable
Live buoy data is not answering right now. Match the rod to the surf state table above: light and long on a calm day, heavy and short-tempered when the sweep is running.
Check the buoy page →This table is the guide. It does not change with the weather, which makes it the part worth printing and keeping in the truck.

|---|---|---|
| Calm | Under 2 ft, wind under 10 kt | 9 ft medium, 1-3 ozUnder 2 ft, wind under 10 ktLight bait and short casts. Whiting and pompano are close in. |

| Moderate | 3-5 ft | 11 ft heavy, 3-6 oz3-5 ftYou need the length to clear the wash and the power to hold 5 oz. |

| Very strong | Over 6 ft, or 20+ kt | 12 ft extra-heavy, 6-12 oz, or stay homeOver 6 ft, or 20+ ktRods break here, not because they are cheap, but because they are overloaded. |

Buy for the water you actually fish. A 7 ft sound rod will not hold 6 oz in the ocean surf, and a 12 ft ocean rod is a liability on the sound.
Match the sinker to the rod's rating, not the other way around. The blank tells you which weights cast well.
Two rods beat one compromise rod. A 9 ft sound setup and an 11 ft surf setup cover nearly everything the Banks throws at you.
The drag matters more than the price tag. A smooth 15 lb of drag lands more fish than an expensive blank with a locking reel.
