Answers to the most common questions about driving on Outer Banks beaches. Tire pressure, getting stuck, towing, closures, and more.
What tire pressure should I run on the beach?
For most Outer Banks beaches, air down to 15–20 psi. This widens your tire's contact patch, distributing vehicle weight over more sand and significantly reducing the chance of getting stuck.
For Cape Lookout's sugar sand, go even lower: 12–15 psi. The finer, drier sand requires maximum floatation.
Important: Always re-inflate your tires before driving on paved roads. Driving on pavement at 15 psi can damage tires and is unsafe. Use the free air-down stations at Oregon Inlet, Avon, or Hatteras Village — or bring a portable air compressor.
Where are the air-down stations?
Free air-down (and air-up) stations are available at three locations on Cape Hatteras National Seashore:
- • Oregon Inlet — near the inlet, south side
- • Avon — near Ramp 25 area
- • Hatteras Village — near the ferry terminal area
No air stations at Corolla/Carova or Cape Lookout. If you're visiting those areas, bring a portable 12V air compressor to re-inflate before driving on pavement.
What should I do if I get stuck in the sand?
- 1. Stop spinning your wheels. Spinning digs you deeper. Stop immediately.
- 2. Lower tire pressure further. Drop to 10–12 psi if you haven't already. This gives maximum floatation.
- 3. Clear sand from around tires. Use your shovel to dig out in front of and behind all four tires.
- 4. Use traction boards. Place traction boards (or wood planks, floor mats) in front of the drive wheels.
- 5. Rock gently. Shift between drive and reverse, applying gentle throttle. Don't gun it.
- 6. Jack and support. If still stuck, use your jack with the support board to lift the vehicle, then fill the hole with sand and place traction material underneath.
- 7. Call for help. If nothing works, call a local towing service. They're experienced with beach recoveries.
Are there towing services for beach recovery?
Yes. Several towing companies on the Outer Banks specialize in beach recovery:
- • Hatteras Island: Island Towing and local services in each village (Rodanthe, Avon, Hatteras). Ask at any tackle shop for the current recommended tow service.
- • Corolla/Carova: Check with the Currituck Visitors Center for current recommendations. Recovery on the 4WD beach can be expensive — expect $150–$300+.
- • Cape Lookout: Recovery is more difficult due to the remote location. Check with the ferry operator for recommended services.
Typical cost: $100–$300+ depending on location, conditions, and how far you're stuck. Some services only operate during daylight hours.
Tip: Save the tow service number in your phone before you hit the beach. Cell service can be spotty on remote sections.

Always check the NPS daily closure map — closures can change by the hour during nesting season.
What are the night driving rules?
On Cape Hatteras National Seashore, night driving is defined as operating an ORV on the beach between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
- • November 16 – April 30: Night driving is permitted with a valid ORV permit. A flashlight or headlamp is required.
- • May 1 – November 15: Night driving is prohibited to protect nesting sea turtles. Vehicles must be off the beach by 10 PM.
- • Cape Lookout NS: Check current regulations — night driving rules may differ. Contact the NPS Harkers Island Visitor Center for details.
- • Corolla/Carova: Currituck County may have separate night driving restrictions. Check with the Visitors Center.

Can I bring my dog on the beach with my vehicle?
Yes, pets are allowed on both Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores, but there are rules:
- • Leash required: Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times.
- • Closure areas: Pets are not allowed in resource closure areas (bird/turtle nesting zones).
- • Swimming beaches: Pets may be restricted on designated lifeguarded swimming beaches during summer.
- • Clean up: You must clean up after your pet. Bring bags.
- • Wildlife: Keep pets away from wildlife — especially nesting birds, turtles, and wild horses in Corolla.
Corolla wild horses: Keep dogs well away from the wild horses. The horses can be aggressive toward dogs, and approaching within 50 feet is a federal violation.
