The Short Version

North Carolina sets the keep floor at 10" — measure carefully, short fish go back. The daily creel is 8 per person per day, and the fishery is open through the whole calendar year.

SnoutTail tipTotal length

Run the tape from the snout to the far edge of the tail pressed flat together — a pinched tail adds the half inch that decides a citation.

What one angler may take per day

Counts are per person unless the rule says "per boat," and they aggregate across everywhere you fished that day — sound, surf, and ocean all land in the same tally.

Where It Stands

Open

Harvest is legal; emergency in-season shutdowns are rare but do happen — glance at the DMF proclamations page anyway.

Shell-Crackers at the Inlet Rocks

Sheepshead work the bridge pilings, inlet rocks and nearshore structure around Oregon Inlet all summer, and they are the most structure-locked fish in the local rulebook. If you find one, you find a pile of them.

Their teeth are built for crushing shells — fiddler crabs and small pieces of clam fished tight to the structure on a light jighead are the local bait, and the bite is often almost imperceptible because they crush bait in place rather than running. Set the hook on any change in feel, and bring an extra rig: they win more than you do.

The Fine Print

  • •10" total length minimum.
  • •8 per person per day.
  • •Structure fish — bridge pilings, jetties, inlet rocks, wrecks and reefs.
  • •Fiddler crab or clam on light tackle, fished tight to structure. The bite is subtle; set on any change in feel.
