Summer · AUGUST

What's biting in August on the Outer Banks?

August is flounder and pompano month on the beach, with sheepshead on the structure and spot starting to show in the sound.

A prime tag is a reason to book the morning; a running tag only says the fish exist right now.

Doing August right

Treat these as a checklist and the rest tends to follow.

  1. Pompano feed right behind the shorebreak. Sand fleas and a light pyramid.

  2. Flounder are moving toward the inlets. Fish the channel edges.

  3. Spot and croaker stack in the sound as the water starts to cool.

The first hint of fall shows late in the month. Watch the water temperature.
